As a celebration of Papua New Guinea’s 20 years of independence in 1995, Gudmundur (Gummi) Fridriksson and Tau Asigau Fridriksson embarked on the production and publication of Destination Papua New Guinea with the support of a culturally diverse team from PNG and abroad. This book was the first comprehensive coffee table style book on PNG to showcase the nation’s diverse cultures, natural beauty, political structure and business sectors.
Born and raised on the Southern Coast of PNG, Tau Asigau Fridriksson’s connection to her homeland and passion for sharing its deep beauty saw her naturally take a lead role in producing the celebration book. Destination Papua New Guinea was the first project Tau Asigau Fridriksson and Gummi Fridriksson collaborated on, drawing from their extensive knowledge of the destination, business and management skills and tourism connections. Gudmundur Fridriksson is a business leader with over 30 years of management experience in a wide range of projects both within PNG and abroad.
Since the initial publication of the book, Gummi Fridriksson has been involved in a diverse range of projects including serving as CEO at Cape York Institute and Cape York Welfare Reform Director at Cape York Partnerships, in Australia. In these roles, Gudmundur Fridriksson led projects aimed at restoring Indigenous authority, supporting engagement in the real economy and initiating education initiatives to increase school participation. In 1996, Gummi Fridriksson co-founded the company behind the Paga Hill Estate development. As CEO of Paga Hill Development Company (PHDC), Gummi Fridriksson has been instrumental in securing the 20ha piece of land for development as well as leading the historical resettlement initiative of Paga Hill settlers to Six Mile.
Tau Asigau Fridriksson’s career includes roles with PNG’s national airline, Air Niugini where she worked for more than 12 years, as well as various roles with Hillside Civil Pty Ltd, Icelandair, Queensland Health, and CCS (PNG) Limited.
20 years later and in the year of the 40th anniversary of Papua New Guinea’s independence, Gudmundur Fridriksson and Tau Asigau Fridriksson present this website in honour of the initial project and publishing of Destination Papua New Guinea and hope that it brings much enjoyment as a historical and informative source for generations to come, reminding us all of the endless beauty, wonder and uniqueness that is Papua New Guinea.
